The Pressure to Have It Together in Your Twenties
There's a particular kind of suffering that comes with your twenties that almost nobody talks about honestly. It's the suffering of looking around at everyone else and believing — really believing — that they have it figured out while you're still trying to find the floor.
Social media makes this worse. Everyone is posting the highlight reel. The new apartment, the promotion, the relationship that looks effortless. What they're not posting is the anxiety at 2am, the call to their mom crying, the feeling that they have no idea what they're doing either.
What's Actually Happening in Your Twenties
Developmental psychologist Jeffrey Jensen Arnett coined the term "emerging adulthood" to describe the period between 18 and 29 — and his research found it to be one of the most psychologically turbulent periods of life. Not because something is wrong with the people in it, but because of what the period actually demands: forming an identity, making major decisions without a roadmap, and doing all of it while the culture tells you you should already know who you are.
This is also the period where unprocessed experiences from childhood and adolescence tend to surface. You're out from under the structure of school, away from your family, and suddenly the things you didn't have to think about before are showing up in your relationships, your work, your sense of worth.
You Don't Need a Crisis to Go to Therapy
One of the most persistent myths about therapy is that you need to be in crisis to benefit from it. Young adults especially internalize this — they think they should be able to handle things on their own, or that their problems aren't serious enough to justify help.
Wanting to understand yourself better is a legitimate reason to go to therapy. Feeling stuck, uncertain, or like you're not living the life you thought you would be — those are legitimate reasons too. You don't have to earn the right to support.
